NYO guide to the orchestra, part 3 - Brass
The following resource is the third of a five part beginner's guide to today's symphony orchestra commissioned by the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.
- Introduction to the orchestra
- Strings
- Brass
- Woodwind
- Percussion
You might use this resource as...
- a stand alone lesson - the kind of thing that's useful when you are displaced from specialist spaces and can't do much in the way of hands-on work
- a follow-up revision or homework resource for students to explore outside of curriculum time
- something to interleave with other teaching materials, perhaps as part of a larger scheme of learning
- before a trip to see/hear a symphony orchestra for the first time, or before a school visit from NYO Inspire or local university orchestra
It's the kind of lesson that lends itself nicely to having guests in the room - experienced orchestral players like members of staff from your school and local community, your VMTs, and older students or alumni (to demonstrate how their instrument works, to play and to answer questions).
Delivery of the materials requires your expertise in the first instance - to guide and inform classroom conversations and bring the world of today's orchestras to life.
